Acknowledgements
I wish to express my gratitude to my supervisor at Stanford University, Professor Brian A.
Wandell, Ph.D., and to my office colleague, Alex R. Wade, Ph.D., for their vital support dur-
ing all stages of this project. They have provided me with advice, encouragement, support,
and assistance. In particular, I would like to thank Brian for all the helpful discussions we had,
for proofreading this report, and for providing me with an excellent working environment. I
would like to thank Alex for the help he always offered when I had questions and for a very
fruitful collaboration. Because of their advice, this report is much better than it otherwise
would be.
I would also like to thank my supervisor at Universität Karlsruhe (TH), Institute of Bio-
medical Engineering, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Olaf Dössel. He has given me the opportunity to do
my masters thesis at Stanford University. In his lecture about medical imaging, he conveyed
much of his enthusiasm about MRI to me, which resulted in my high degree of motivation
during the whole course of this research project.
In addition, I am grateful to Robert F. Dougherty, Ph.D., Alyssa A. Brewer, and Jonathan
S. Beier, who applied and tested my program. Bob is a senior research scientist; Alyssa and
Jonathan are students at the lab. Their recommendations and suggestions were very useful and
helped to improve the tool mrFindBorders. I would like to thank Bob for proofreading my
document. Feng Xiao has done some initial work in the field of semi-automatic segregation of
visual areas. I would like to thank him for the initial help he offered. Professor David J. Hee-
ger shared his ideas about visual field sign maps with me. Dr. Barbara Zenger-Landolt and Dr.
Peter Neri, two post-doctoral students at Davids lab, gave me valuable feedback. I would like
to thank Ms. Jan Ruby for her support. She is the lab manager of Brians lab. Due to her
experience, and the outstanding organization, the required amount of paperwork was kept at a
minimum level and most potential problems could be avoided. All members of Brians and
Davids labs made my stay very pleasant and enjoyable.
I would also like to thank Prof. Dr. Bernd Fischer, a professor of numerical analysis at the
Medical University of Luebeck in Germany, who is a visitor in Stanfords SCCM program
