Anatomical Terms
·
anterior Toward the front; sometimes used as a synonym for rostral, and sometimes
as a synonym for ventral. [Purves, et al., 1997 #1]
·
posterior Toward the back; sometimes used as a synonym for caudal and/or dorsal.

·
sagittal planes If the subject is standing upright, (para-)sagittal planes are perpen-
dicular to the floor and divide in a left and in a right part [Zigmond, et al., 1999 #2].
·
axial planes (horizontal plane) Axial planes are parallel to the floor if the person is
standing [Beatty, 2000 #3].
·
coronal planes Coronal planes are perpendicular to the axial (horizontal) plane and
parallel to a line between the ears [Beatty, 2000 #3].
·
dorsal Referring to the back. [Purves, et al., 1997 #1]
·
ventral Referring to the belly. The opposite of dorsal. [Purves, et al., 1997 #1]
·
rostral Anterior, or headward. [Purves, et al., 1997 #1]
·
caudal Posterior, or tailward. [Purves, et al., 1997 #1]
